The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
